How Much Does a Banquet Server Cost?

A banquet server costs $37 to $50 per hour through Julia Valler, with a 5-hour minimum. Because galas and plated dinners usually run longer than the minimum, most clients book banquet teams for 6 hours or more, including setup and breakdown.

What Makes Banquet Service Different

Banquet service is synchronized service. At a plated dinner, every table should receive each course at nearly the same moment, and plates are cleared together before the next course goes out. That requires servers who know banquet etiquette, can carry multiple plates, serve from the correct side and follow a captain's signals.

This is why banquet experience matters more than at a buffet or a cocktail party. One slow section delays the entire room, including the speeches and awards scheduled between courses.

Included in the Hourly Rate

Your rate covers a server who has passed our screening, knows banquet standards and arrives in your chosen uniform. As W-2 employees, our servers are on our payroll and our insurance, not yours. If a server can't make it, a backup takes the spot. Your sales executive coordinates the team size, timing and dress code with you before the event.

What Drives the Cost of a Banquet Team

  • Number of courses. Each course adds service and clearing rounds. A four-course dinner needs a larger or longer-working team than a two-course one.
  • Event schedule. Speeches, award segments and dancing stretch the evening. Book enough hours to cover the full program plus setup.
  • City. Rates range from $37 in Houston and Las Vegas to $50 in San Francisco and DC.
  • Team leadership. Large banquets run more smoothly with an experienced captain directing the servers, which can be added to your quote.
  • Multi-day events. Conferences with daily luncheons and dinners are priced across all days and shifts.
  • Advance notice. Gala season and December fill up early, and late bookings may limit availability.

The Case for Booking Banquet Servers Through an Agency

A banquet team has to perform as a unit from the first course. Pulling together individual freelancers who have never worked together is risky for a high-profile dinner. An agency gives you a team trained to the same standards, a single point of contact and a replacement plan if someone cancels. You pay one invoice and skip the hiring, onboarding and payroll entirely.

“For a plated dinner, I always ask clients for the run of show before we talk about staff numbers. If there's a 20-minute speech between the salad and the main course, the team needs to clear and reset quietly during it. Good banquet service is invisible, and that takes planning, not just more people.” says Julia Valler, founder of Julia Valler Event Staffing.
